Will Hurd ended his presidential campaign on October 9, 2023.

We live in complicated times, and we need common sense. The are a number of generational defining challenges that we're faced with in the United States of America. [...] I believe the Republican Party can be the party that talks about the future, not the past.[1]

—Will Hurd (June 2023)[2]

Will Hurd (R) was a former U.S. Representative from Texas. He officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on June 22, 2023.[2] Hurd suspended his campaign on October 9, 2023.[3]

Hurd said the biggest problems facing the country were inflation, immigration without legal permission, crime, and homelessness. In his campaign announcement video, Hurd criticized Joe Biden (D) and Donald Trump (R), saying, "President Biden can't solve these problems, or won't, and if we nominate a lawless, selfish, failed politician like Donald Trump, who lost the House, the Senate, and the White House, we all know Joe Biden will win again." Hurd said his vision for America included increasing employment through the use of new technology like artificial intelligence, improved education access, and fostering a society "that acknowledges science, addresses mental health, and is inclusive and understanding."[4]

Hurd served in the House from 2015 to 2021, representing Texas' 23rd Congressional District. Click here to read more about Hurd's biography.

Biography

Hurd was born in San Antonio, Texas, on August 19, 1977. He received a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University in 2000.

After graduating, Hurd worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for 9 years. He was stationed primarily in Washington, D.C., where his duties included congressional briefings, and in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. After his time with the CIA, Hurd worked as a partner for the Crumpton Group and as a senior advisor for the cybersecurity firm FusionX.

Hurd was first elected to public office in 2014, when he defeated then-incumbent Pete Gallego (D) to represent Texas' 23rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served three terms before announcing he would not seek re-election in 2020.

Campaign themes

Website

Hurd listed the following policy positions on his campaign website as of September 6, 2023.

New Family Values
I don’t care who you are or where you live. You want to be able to put food on your table, a roof over your family and to ensure the people you love are healthy and happy.

New Family values are about ensuring we increase access to health care while decreasing its cost, provide our seniors with quality care and compassion and treat our kids like they are our future.

Technology
The technological change we are going to see in the next 30 years is going to make the change we saw in the last 30 years look insignificant. We must be prepared to take advantage of technology before it takes advantage of us.

With an increasingly interconnected world we need to treat cyber as a domain just like air, land, sea, and space. We need a national cyber strategy to defend our systems from state and non-state actors.

Education
We have income inequality because we have education inequality. We have to prepare our kids for jobs that don’t exist today.

Energy
If the United States is going to maximize the advancement of our citizens while sustaining harmony with our planet, we have to stop listening to extreme environmentalists and climate deniers when it comes to energy policy and environmental issues.

Jobs & The Economy
American economic and military dominance is no longer guaranteed. Prosperity is a product of empowering people not the Government. To move people up the economic ladder we need free markets not democratic socialism.

We have benefitted from the brain drain from every other country in the world. We need to benefit from the hard working drain as well, and we need immigration policy in place that puts strong disincentives from coming here illegally so we have a much more manageable immigration system.

USA Foreign Policy
America has become an exceptional nation not because of what we have taken but what we have given. We need a foreign policy that inspires fear in our enemies and causes our friends to love us.

Domestic policy
Domestic policy plays a pivotal role in upholding the principles of limited government and individual liberty.

Sound domestic policies promote self-reliance, personal responsibility, and free-market competition, fostering an environment where citizens can thrive without excessive government intervention.

Leadership
There has been and continues to be a lack of leadership in Washington, D.C. Leaders should inspire not fearmonger. It’s simple. Don’t be a jerk, racist, misogynist or homophobe and work together to accomplish big things.[5][1]

The following section provides a timeline of Hurd's campaign activity from June to August 2023. The entries are sorted by month in reverse chronological order.

2023

  • October 9, 2023: Hurd suspended his campaign and endorsed former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley (R). In a statement, Hurd said, "Unfortunately, it has become clear to me and my team that the time has come to suspend our campaign. While I appreciate all the time and energy our supporters have given, it is important to recognize the realities of the political landscape and the need to consolidate our party around one person to defeat both Donald Trump and President Biden. [...] I believe Ambassador Nikki Haley is the best person in this race to do that. Ambassador Haley has shown a willingness to articulate a different vision for the country than Donald Trump and has an unmatched grasp on the complexities of our foreign policy. "[6]
  • October 7, 2023: Hurd issued a statement in response to Hamas' military attacks against Israel, and Israel's subsequent declaration of war. Hurd said, "An unprovoked launching of thousands of rockets at civilians and kidnapping innocent people is neither resistance nor self defense, it's an act of terrorism. Hamas and its backer Iran are creating the pre-conditions for a war they will lose. The international community should support Israel's right to defend itself."[7]

  • September 29, 2023: Hurd spoke at the Atlantic Festival in Washington, D.C..[8]
  • September 27, 2023: Hurd released a statement in response to not qualifying for the second Republican primary debate. Hurd said, "Just 14 weeks ago, I became the final candidate to enter the Republican primary field. In the short time since, our campaign received enough donations from over 50,000 individuals who support our vision and registered at 3% in New Hampshire polling. Unfortunately, we narrowly missed the cut for the second debate and our campaign is at an inflection point. [...] My team and I are constantly evaluating whether we have the resources to chart a path to victory. I'm headed to New Hampshire to spread my message to the Granite State ahead of the First In the Nation primary."[9]
  • September 21, 2023: Hurd spoke at the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce's Nevada State Dinner in Washington, D.C..[10]
  • September 20, 2023: Hurd released his Artificial Intelligence policy. Hurd wrote, "When Russian President Vladimir Putin said that whoever masters AI will master the world, we didn’t know he was predicting a technology Cold War between the United States and China where the victor will shape global markets and norms for the rest of this century. AI can drive economic growth by optimizing tasks and improving supply chains. AI can lead to longer and more fulfilling lives by spurring innovation in sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and biosciences. AI can bolster our energy independence by optimizing resource utilization and reducing reliance on foreign sources."[11]
