Laws governing ballot measures in New Jersey
The New Jersey General Assembly may place measures on the ballot as legislatively referred constitutional amendments, legislatively referred state statutes, and legislatively referred bond measures. Constitutional amendments require either a 60% vote in each chamber during one legislative session or a simple majority vote in each chamber in two successive legislative sessions to be placed on the ballot. Statutes and bond measures both require a simple majority vote in each chamber during one legislative session and both require the signature of the governor to be placed on the ballot.
