Corey Stapleton (R) was the Montana Secretary of State from 2017-2021. He officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on November 11, 2022.[3] He filed with the Federal Election Commission on October 6, 2022.[4] Stapleton withdrew his candidacy on October 13, 2023.[5]
Before serving as Montana secretary of state, Stapleton was a member of the Montana State Senate from 2001 to 2007.
Biography
Stapleton was born in Seattle, Washington in 1967. He grew up in Great Falls, Montana, after his family moved there in 1969.[6] After graduating from Great Falls High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he attended nuclear power school. He was appointed to the Naval Academy and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1992. He received a master's degree in political science from Temple University in 1995.
He returned to Montana in 1997 and began a career as a financial advisor.[7] He also served as president of the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind Foundation.[7]
Stapleton's political career began in 2000 when he was elected to the Montana State Senate. He won re-election in 2004 and in 2005 was elected Chairman of the Legislative Campaign Committee. During his final year in the legislature in 2007, he served as Minority Leader.[7] Stapleton was elected Montana Secretary of State on November 8, 2016. He was sworn into office on January 2, 2017, and served through the end of his term. In 2022, Stapleton began making country music, releasing two albums under the name Corey Stapleton & The Pretty Pirates.[8]

2023
- October 13, 2023: Stapleton suspended his campaign. In a statement, Stapleton said, "I wasn't able to break through."[16]
- September 27, 2023: Stapleton spoke about federalism at the American Democracy Summit in Los Angeles, California.[17]
- September 25, 2023: Stapleton spoke at a roundtable discussion about economics, artificial intelligence, and sustainability in New York City.[18]
- September 13, 2023: Stapleton spoke at a World Affairs Council of New Hampshire event in Manchester, New Hampshire.[19]
- July 20, 2023: Stapleton issued a press release about foreign policy. The release said, "the U.S. and China are economic rivals, not enemies. As a former naval officer and Montana Secretary of State, Stapleton is advocating for a more cooperative approach between the two global powers. He has condemned the spike in nationalist rhetoric and military-style posturing, which could lead to conflict."[20]
- July 15, 2023: The July quarterly Federal Election Commission campaign finance reporting deadline passed. Stapleton reported raising $536 and spending $796 with $3,293 in cash on hand as of June 30.[21]
- May 4, 2023: Stapleton held a town hall in New Hampshire.[22]

- January 27, 2023: During his visit to Ukraine, Stapleton met with People's Deputies Ivan Shynkarenko and Volodymyr Kabachenko, and Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn.[26]
- January 20, 2023: Stapleton announced he would visit Ukraine. In a press release, he said, "The diplomatic solution to the Russian-Ukrainian war can be found, but it must involve strength and unity from the West. Similar to the Cold War, sustained peace is gained not by force, but strength and resolve between America and our European allies."[27]
- November 11, 2022: Stapleton officially announced his campaign for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In a statement, he said, "We're failing our children and grandchildren by racking up massive national debt, stealing part of their future. Our kids deserve the freedom and prosperity that we older Americans inherited. The buck stops here."[28]
