    226 statewide ballot measures were on the ballot in 37 states in 2006. This included:

    Of the 226 total ballot measures, 204 were on the November 7, 2006 ballot, with 22 appearing earlier on statewide primary ballots.

    The state with the most ballot measures was Louisiana, with 21--all of which were referred to the ballot by the Louisiana legislature, since Louisiana doesn't permit the initiative and referendum process.

    Of the 226 ballot measures on the 2006 ballot, 97 (or 42.9%) of these ballot measures had no campaign finance activity associated with them, while 129 (or 57.1%) of these ballot measures did have campaign finance activity associated with them. A total of $661,158,176 was contributed to the 129 ballot measures that did attract campaign donations on one or both sides. 56% of the overall $661,158,176 was donated to California campaigns.
